The Sea-King District Two 3A Volleyball Tournament began Thursday, Nov. 3rd, with a four-match, loser-out round between Metro seeds 3 through 7 and KingCo seeds 3 through 5. The matches were played at West Seattle and Liberty High Schools. Following the initial four matches at 5:30 pm, the winners played the top four seeds at 7:30 pm. All eight teams from the second round contend on Saturday in the final rounds of the tournament for the four seeds to the State tournament. Saturday's matches will be held at Blanchet High School. Play begins at 11 am with the winner's bracket semi-finals, and concludes with the 8 pm match for the District Championship. The current schedule and bracket results are available on this link to the Sea-King webpage:

29 Oct. 2005: The League Crossovers were played at Franklin Pierce High School on Saturday, October 29th. King Division took the 1st and 5th cross-over matches. The competition was remarkably even in all five matches.

The seeds to the West Central districts will depend upon the results of a Nisqually League Match on Monday. The Nisqually match between Life Christian Academy and Cascade Christian was played on Saturday and LCA won, so LCA finishes with a League record of 11-1. This narrows the range of possible Nisqually outcomes, and all will depend upon the result of North Mason's match at Sequim.
|
If Sequim defeats North Mason, then Sequim is 1st and North Mason is 3rd (LCA 2nd).
|
If North Mason defeats Sequim, then North Mason is 2nd and Sequim is 3rd (LCA 1st). |
It is my understanding after talking to several coaches that the insertion points for the Nisqually teams are: 1st in Nisqually gets 3rd, 2nd in Nisqually gets 6th, and 3rd in Nisqually gets 8th. If this is so, then the West Central District Bracket will likely be filled from one of the two right-most columns of the following table:
| Seamount Cross-Over |
Sequim defeats North Mason |
North Mason defeats Sequim |
| 1. Kennedy | 1. Kennedy | 1. Kennedy |
| 2. White River | 2. White River | 2. White River |

| 8. Hazen | 8. North Mason | 8. Sequim |
| 9. Evergreen | 9. Lakes | 9. Lakes |
| 10. Clover Park | 10. Hazen | 10. Hazen |
| 11. Evergreen | 11. Evergreen | |
| 12. Clover Park | 12. Clover Park |
The top three teams from the West Central District 3A Volleyball Tournament will advance to the State Championships on Nov. 11th and 12th in Everett.

27 Oct. 2005, Kennedy H. S.: Hazen won its first two matches to secure the King Division 4th seed, and Evergreen beat Lindbergh in three, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12 to win the 5th and final seed to the League Cross-Over. Both Hazen and Evergreen will participate in the West Central District Tournament which will be held on Nov. 3rd and 5th at White River High School.

18 Oct. 2005: The playoff bracket and schedule for the District Three Volleyball Tournament is now available from the District 3 page of the WIAA website. Four schools will play loser-out matches at White River at 3:30 pm (Seeds 5 and 12, and 6 and 11,) followed by Seeds 7 and 10 and Seeds 8 and 9 which also play loser-out matches at 5:30 pm. The winners of the 3:30 pm matches will then play Seeds 3 and 4 at 7:30 pm. The matches between the winners of the 5:30 pm matches and Seeds 1 and 2 will be played Saturday morning at 9 am. The 7:30 pm matches, and the matches on Saturday morning are not loser-out ... both teams continue on to compete for the three seeds to the State Tournament.
|
West Central District Three Tournament Bracket (note: The version of the bracket dated Oct. 18th incorrectly shows 4 teams seeded into the State Tournament. Just three are invited this year.) |
27 Oct. 2005: The other league that sends teams to the District Three 3A Volleyball Tournament is the Nisqually League. This League has 1A, 2A and 3A schools. The two 3A schools in the Nisqually League are Sequim and North Mason. Standings in the Nisqually League as posted on the WIAA webpage following the matches of Wednesday, October 26th, are as follows:
Sequim (3A), 10-1
Life Christian Academy (1A), 11-1 (updated 10/30)
North Mason (3A), 9-2
Vashon Island (2A), 7-4
Foster (2A), 7-4
Sequim and North Mason are seeded into the District Three Tournament based on their finish within league. The schedules for Sequim and North Mason are shown below. It appears that Sequim has a chance to finish first if it wins its last match since it won the head-to-head match with Life Christian Academy on Monday, Oct. 24th. North Mason is locked into 3rd unless it is able to defeat Sequim in the final match of the season at Sequim. North Mason lost to Life Christian Academy in their match on October 12th. But a North Mason win on November 1st would put it in 2nd and Sequim in 3rd, assuming Life Christian Academy wins its final match (LCA won this match on Saturday, Oct. 29.)
| Date | North Mason | Sequim |
| 11/1/05 | @Sequim, 3A (10-1) | North Mason, 3A (9-2) |

I received a note from the Renton School District informing me that we will not be allowed to play the Friday matches at the early schedule suggested by Tom Muckerheide and supported by me and several other coaches (JV/C at 4:30 PM, Varsity at 6 pm.) I have notified Greater Seattle Volleyball Officials (GSVO.org) that our request for the early hours needs to be modified to use the standard Seamount League format, JV/C at 5:45 pm, Varsity at 7 pm. This affects the Kennedy and Evergreen matches at Lindbergh on September 30th and October 7th respectively. Lindbergh is also scheduled to play at Renton on September 23rd (Friday,) and we assume that Renton will move the times back per the District's directive. (Update on Sept. 14, the current GSVO schedule shows these matches at the standard league time.)
The King Division Jamboree at Lindbergh High School went off on schedule and stayed on time. The West Seattle High School JV's filled in for the Evergreen JV's, and all teams got the maximum number of games spread out over their four opponents (2-2-1-1.)

The Seamount Coaches meeting was held at 6:00 pm, immediately before the August 18th WIAA Rules Clinic at Fife High School. The meeting was fairly brief. The following are the major items that were either discussed or in need of discussion and all require action:
|
The Seamount League tournament has not been
scheduled, and the format is still under discussion. Coaches were
urged to contact their AD's with their preference for the League Tournament.
The AD's were given one 16 team proposal which was broadly supported by the
coaches, as one of the alternatives under consideration. The other
option is
a simple head-to-head playoff, like that conducted in 2003.
|
No plans were announced for Pierce or King
Division Jamborees. The WIAA rules say that the tournament must be
held within three weeks of the first day of practice, which, given the ten
practice day eligibility rule, means it must fall in the week of Sept. 5th
(Labor Day) to Sept. 10th (Saturday.) Three or more teams must
participate, and teams can play 2 games against any given opponent for a
maximum of six games.
Teams (and players) may only participate in one Jamboree. There was a
general interest among the King Division schools to try and schedule a
Jamboree, but the time is obviously short. And all the schools are
scheduled to play their first league match on Thursday, Sept. 8th. One
possibility is to hold two small Jamborees of three or four teams on Tuesday
Sept. 6th or Wednesday Sept. 7th.
|
Marc Blau the assigning secretary for the Tacoma Referee's Board said that all of the 3A and 4A Leagues in the Southern Puget Sound region have scheduled Thursday matches. Consequently, there are not enough referees to provide two referee to each match site. This would preclude simultaneous JV and C matches, and the Varsity matches would be conducted with just the R1 (the up ref.) He asked that we reschedule to Fridays if possible. Michael Young, representing the Seattle-area referees board, also indicated that they would prefer Tuesday and Friday matches due to a shortage of officials, and conflicts with collegiate schedules. The King Division has always supported Friday matches, and plans are afoot to reschedule as many of the Wednesday and Thursday matches to Friday as possible among the King Division schools. |
An updated schedule for the 2005 season may be downloaded from this pdf file:
2005 Seamount Volleyball Schedule

Nov. 3rd and 5th: West Central Districts, at White River High School.
