Fife defeats White River .. On to DistrictsOct. 26, 2001: Fife finished the regular season with victories over White River on Wednesday, (15-7, 15-9, 15-10,) and Clover Park on Thursday, (15-1, 15-0, 15-3,) to finish with a perfect 12-0 match record and the Pierce Division Championship. White River's loss drops them to third, with Washington taking sole possession of second. Peninsula came in fourth, finishing the season with a victory over Lakes on Monday, (15-12, 15-9, 15-0.) Peninsula will play a pigtail match with Sequim High School for the fourth seed to the West Central Districts. The Sequim team is pretty much the same group that knocked Fife out of Districts last year. Although Sequim did not finish in the top eight at States, they had the bad luck of being in the same pool as Columbia River and West Valley (Yakima,) last year's First and Fourth place finishers. Columbia River placed second in that pool, losing a match to West Valley, before racking up victories over Burlington-Edison, Kennedy, and Camas to claim the State 3A Championship.

Previous articlesFife Wins Pierce Division, Peninsula Fourth, Washington and White River Currently tied for Second.23 Oct. 2001: Fife defeated Lakes last Thursday to lock up the Divisional Championship, and finishes the season with matches against White River and Clover Park on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Meanwhile Peninsula completed Divisional play with matches against Clover Park last Thursday and Lakes yesterday. We have confirmed that they won both matches to finish the season with a 7-5 match record and Fourth Place. On Wednesday, Washington finishes up at home against Franklin Pierce, and White River hosts Fife. Both are tied for second, so these matches will determine their final standings. Also on Wednesday, Lakes finishes the season at Clover Park. Fife Rolls On, But Upsets Mark Play Elsewhere17 Oct. 2001: Fife took Washington in three games 15-5, 16-14, and 15-5 to bolster their claim to the SeaMount/Pierce Divisional Championship. Meanwhile, Peninsula defeated White River, and Clover Park upset Franklin Pierce, 16-18, 12-15, 15-11, 15-8, and 15-8. The Peninsula victory creates the possibility of a wide-open, three team race for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place in the closing matches of the regular season And the prizes for 2nd and 3rd place are substantial. The fourth place Pierce Division team must play Sequim in a loser out "pig-tail" match to determine ownership of the fourth Pierce seed to the West Central Districts. The two higher seeds have no such hurdles. This could get interesting! Scoring and Assists Leader Coverage Begun16 Oct. 2001: We have received player highlight information from Franklin Pierce High School, and we have season-to-date totals from Fife for their leading players. This data, supplemented with partial results taken from highlights published in the Seattle Times and the South County Journal over the last month, allows us to commence coverage of the Points Scored and Assist leaders. We have also created an Individual Highlights page for Franklin Pierce. District Championship Plans Nearly Complete12 Oct. 2001: The format for the West Central District Tournament is in the process of being finalized. Plans are to place Seamount/King Division 1 and 4 in a pool with Seamount/Pierce Division 2 and 3, and Pierce 1 and 4 in the other pool with King 2 and 3. The team filling the Pierce 4th seed will be selected from outside the Seamount League. As we presently understand the process, the assignment of the outside team to the fourth seed will not be based on any match results against the top three Pierce Division teams. This blind seeding could work to the benefit of the 2nd and 3rd seed Pierce Division teams and to the detriment of the 1st seed. The tournament is scheduled to be held at Fife High School on Saturday, November 3rd with both pool play and playoffs on the same day. Pool play begins at 9:00 am, and one court has been assigned to each pool. The match order is 1-4, 2-3, 1-3, 2-4, 1-2, and finally 3-4. Subsequent matches are scheduled to begin every hour and fifteen minutes, and pool play should be over by 4:30 pm. Under the present plan, there will be no cross-over match between the pools. The first place teams from each pool will play each other for the District Championship, and the second place finishers will play for the third and final seed into the State Tournament.
10 Oct. 2001: At the request of some Pierce Division schools, we are beginning coverage of the Divisional standings and match results. We do not have complete match records at this time, but we have enough to warrant an initial tabulation. If coaches will forward their match results (e.g. on MM/DD X defeated Y, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0) to us at the email address below, we will update the table. |
