| Kennedy and Mt. Rainier Finish 12-1, Highline and Evergreen Round out King Division Entries to Nov. 3rd Districts24 Oct. 2001: Final Standings
Game scores for all of the Seamount/King matches may be found in the Match Results table.
West Central DistrictsDistrict play is scheduled for Nov. 3rd, 2001, at Fife High School beginning at 9:00 am. Eight teams, four of which are from the King Division, will be seeded into two pools as shown in the table below:
Play will begin with the four-team round robins, and only two teams from each pool will advance. The top finishers from the pools will compete for the District Championship and the first and second seeds, respectively, to the State Tournament. Second place finishers from the pools will compete for the third and final seed to the State Tournament. All other teams are eliminated. The State Tournament will held the following week at St. Martins with pool play for sixteen teams on Friday, and playoffs for the final eight on Saturday.
Previous Standings:No Upsets, Kennedy and Mt. Rainier Remain Tied19 Oct. 2001 (updated 1:58 pm): The final matches of the regular season are scheduled for next Tuesday night, Oct. 23rd. But after twelve matches, six of the Division's eight teams are locked in ties that may not be resolved even with Tuesday's play. If these ties persist, we have learned that there will be no tie-breakers. If Kennedy and Mt. Rainier end up tied, they will be declared Co-Champions and will then toss a coin to see who gets the first King Division seed to the West Central Districts. Since Evergreen defeated Lindbergh in their single meeting this year, that match would serve as the tiebreaker if needed to determine who is 4th in the Division. Meanwhile, out on the courts, the teams are still playing their hearts out. The three-game match wins posted by Kennedy and Mt. Rainier suggest that both teams are getting serious about Districts and qualifying for States. Highline managed just 7 points against Kennedy, and Evergreen scored just 12 against Mt. Rainier. Both Kennedy and Mt. Rainier showed a lot of offensive punch against quality opponents. Christina Hengtgen and Michelle Aurelio of Kennedy combined for a total of 21 kills, and Melver, Anderson and Monahan of Mt. Rainier together pounded in 29 kills.. In the other matches, Renton put in another determined effort, the six core varsity players working hard until 9:30 pm. But the Indians couldn't respond in kind when the Eagles finally got their offense in gear midway through the fourth game. Hazen handled Tyee, but not without some fireworks in the second game.
Mt. Rainier Defeats Kennedy ... Both Now Tied for 1st17 Oct. 2001: Last night's scores show that there was a lot of very competitive volleyball going on across the entire SeaMount/King Division. Mt. Rainier defeated Kennedy in a must win situation at home; Highline managed to secure it's 3rd place standing with a fifth game deuce win over Lindbergh; Evergreen went to Hazen and after losing the first game, took the next three from the Highlanders to pull ahead of Lindbergh in the race for fourth; and Renton won it's first match of the season in a five game scramble-fest with Tyee that finished at 9:30 pm. It is likely that we will need a tie-breaker to decide the Divisional Championship, and the race between Lindbergh and Evergreen for the fourth and final seed to the West Central Districts may not be decided until the final match.
Stage Set for Kennedy - Mt. Rainier Showdown12 Oct. 2001: Kennedy brushed past Lindbergh 15-0, 15-2 and 15-5 while Mt. Rainier turned back Hazen 15-2, 15-13, and 15-5, thus making this coming Tuesday's match of Kennedy at Mt. Rainier the de facto Divisional Championship. If Kennedy wins on Tuesday, then the Lancers will go to 11-0 in Divisional play while the Rams will fall to 9-2. This would be an insurmountable lead with just two matches left, even accounting for the fact that one of those matches is with a Highline team that improves by the day. But if the Rams win, the two teams would be tied at 10-1, and realistically, they would have to make plans for some sort of playoff in the last week of October to decide the championship. Lindbergh's loss dropped them to 5-5, and a likely tie with Evergreen who was favored to beat Tyee last night raising their record to 5-5 (we did not have the Evergreen-Tyee results at publication time.) Meanwhile, Highline continued to show improvement as they methodically passed and dug everything Renton could dish out, returning each free ball with a sound offensive play, and cruising to victory 15-3, 15-4, and 15-5. Highline can cement a third place finish with a victory over Lindbergh this coming Tuesday. The Pirates finish out against Kennedy and Tyee, so even with a loss to Kennedy, emerging from Tuesday's match with a win would give them no worse than an 8-5 season record, and most likely it would be 9-4. If Lindbergh wins, things get real complicated, depending on the Evergreen situation. The really interesting race will likely be for the fourth and final seed to the West Central District Championships. Both Lindbergh and Evergreen are neck and neck, and they are not scheduled to play each other again this season. Lindbergh plays Highline, Renton and then finishes at home against Mt. Rainier. Evergreen plays Hazen, then Mt. Rainier, and finishes at Renton. Although not out mathematically, Hazen is probably no longer in the running unless both Evergreen and Lindbergh stumble badly. But the Highlanders can help themselves with a victory over Evergreen at home next Tuesday. They finish the season with matches at Tyee and then at home against Kennedy. (Partial Results from Oct. 11)
Highline Tightens Grip on 3rdWednesday, Oct. 10th, 2001. There were no upsets last night as Highline beat Evergreen to solidify its claim to third place in the SeaMount/King Division. Third place is an important goal since it is the last slot for King Division teams at the SeaMount Districts. But the Pirates can't celebrate quite yet. Lindbergh kept its hopes alive when it turned back Hazen after dropping the first game 15-6. The Lindbergh-Highline match at Lindbergh next Tuesday thus looks like the last hurdle for the Pirates, and it should be a good one. At their last meeting, Highline won in three, but the final game was 15-13, so Lindbergh has shown that they have the talent to give the Pirates some trouble. And Hazen deserves a pat on the back. The Highlanders have come within eight points, spread out over two matches, of upsetting BOTH Highline AND Lindbergh within the last week. Meanwhile, Kennedy and Mt. Rainier rolled on relatively untouched towards their Divisional Championship match next Tuesday at Mt. Rainier. Mt. Rainier needs to defeat both Hazen and Kennedy in the next six days to keep their hopes of a Divisional Championship alive.
Kennedy Lancers lead Division at Mid-PointSunday, Oct. 7th, 2001. After four weeks of Divisional play, Kennedy is in first place followed by Mt. Rainier and Highline. Each King Division team has now played all seven opponents once, and each has completed the first match of the second round. Evergreen defeated Lindbergh on Tuesday, and so Evergreen would seem to have title to the fourth spot despite sharing equivalent won-loss records with Lindbergh after eight matches. In other news, Hazen gave Highline a scare on Tuesday, losing in the fifth game, 9-15. The battle for the third and final seed to Districts will likely be decided in the next three matches since Highline plays Evergreen on Tuesday, Oct. 9th, and then plays Lindbergh the following Tuesday, Oct. 16th. But it may not be so simple. Hazen, Tyee and Renton all have the opportunity to spoil someone's post-season plans since each has taken games from either Lindbergh or Evergreen, or both. And Hazen still has a "mathematical" shot at third assuming it defeats Lindbergh on Tuesday, then defeats Evergreen the following Tuesday, and then gets some help against Highline. And remember, Evergreen and Lindbergh are not scheduled to play again this year due to the 13 match Divisional schedule, so things could get real interesting with one or two upsets.
