Visitors: 2002 Seamount Volleyball Stats and ReportsSeason SummaryThe 2002 season saw a much improved playoff format for the League and District tournaments, and some new names in the top spots. The surprising White River team won the Pierce Division with a perfect 12-0 League record, while the Mt. Rainier girls won the King Division with an even more perfect 14-0 record. The post season was full of surprises, and ultimately disappointments. The League and District tournaments were extremely competitive and entertaining, with match results switching from one weekend to the next. The League tournament, using a best three-of-five format for the Championship match, saw White River defeat Mt. Rainier in convincing fashion, 18-16, 15-2, 15-5. A week later, the Mt. Rainier girls rallied to defeat White River 5-15, 15-12, and 15-10, in the best two-of-three District Finals. The Sequim team, after defeating fourth place Franklin Pierce to gain entry to Districts, took the 3rd seed to States with a defeat of Kennedy, 15-9, 15-12, Kennedy recovering its composure after this loss, defeated a resurgent Fife team to take the fourth and final seed to States. And in the process reversing the previous week's defeat at the League Tournament. At the State Tournament in the Yakima Sun Dome, the Seamount teams were seeded into some tough pools, and most faltered. Mt. Rainier lost in pool play to Newport (Kingco Chamipion, 6th place overall at States) and Bishop Blanchet (Metro 2nd, 5th place overall) and Grandview (Yakima area,) and was eliminated. The Blanchet/Mt. Rainier match was probably an emotional one, since a year ago, Mt. Rainier ended Blanchet's hope of a final-eight appearance with a victory in pool. Perennial State competitor Kennedy, in the toughest pool, lost to Seattle Prep (Metro Champion, 1st overall at States,) Mark Morris (Vancouver area, 3rd overall at States,) and Lynden (Bellingham area.) White River ended up in a three-way tie for first in its pool, and was eliminated in the rally-point playoffs by Selah (7th in State,) and Columbia River (2nd in State.) Only Sequim made it to the final eight, and after losing to Blanchet, Mark Morris and Selah, they finished 8th. This was surely a let-down for the teams. But the results don't tell the whole story. The quality of the competition was excellent, and it will be some time before we once again see the kinds of upsets and reversals that we had this year. Next year we will see some real fireworks. Fife and Kennedy have some Juniors who will be looking to reestablish their dominance of the Divisions; White River will be anxious to show that this year wasn't a fluke; Washington is still loaded with talent; and the under-classmen at Mt. Rainier will want to show that they can fill the shoes of the graduating Seniors. And Highline is beginning to show strong signs that it is becoming a volleyball power-house. Waiting in the wings to knock off unsuspecting Seamount teams, Sequim continues to thrive at the tail-end of a very good development program that extends into the elementary schools. And at the State level, we need to keep in mind that Seattle Prep, Blanchet, and Newport will be back, and perhaps this next year River Ridge will finally figure out how to get past District 4 powers like Black Hills, Mark Morris and Columbia River. And to make things even more interesting, we will be going to 25-point rally-scored games! West Central Districts ... King Teams Redeemed10 Nov. 2002: The District Tournament was a terrific event. Mt. Rainier defeated White River reversing the previous week's Seamount League Result, Sequim took third place, and Kennedy defeated Fife for the fourth place and the final seed to States. Pool and match scores, and match highlights are available on the District Tournament results page. Pierce Division Sweeps League Tournament2 Nov. 2002: Following some last minute rescheduling, the Seamount League Tournament saw the Pierce Division teams dominate their King counterparts. In the loser-out matches to qualify for the 7th and 8th seed match, Peninsula defeated Hazen 15-12, 15-7, and Franklin Pierce defeated Evergreen 16-14, 15-4. Peninsula went on to defeat Franklin Pierce 7-15, 15-11, 15-7 to take the much favored 7th seed. Franklin Pierce with the 8th seed becomes the lowest seeded Pierce Division team and so it falls to them to travel to Sequim on Tuesday to play the pig-tail match with the Nisqually League Champion, Sequim, in defense of their seed in the West Central Districts. The loser of this pigtail match is out, and the winner takes the 8th seed position. The bracket contesting the third- through sixth seeds saw a resurgent Fife team defeat Kennedy 11-15, 15-13, 15-13 in one semi-final, and Washington defeated Highline 15-2, 15-11, in the other. In Kennedy's loss to Fife, the Lancers (Kennedy) fell behind 2-11 in both of the final games. They were able to come back, but Fife kept the pressure on, and ultimately prevailed. Fife then defeated Washington 15-12, 15-7 to take the 3rd seed (Washington finished 4th,) and Kennedy defeated Highline 15-9, 15-2, to take the 5th seed, with Highline 6th. The digging abilities of the Pierce teams seemed to be the big difference between the Divisions. The Seamount League Championship match was a best of three format, and it started out with a terrific game that went over an hour. Behind 8-12, Mt. Rainier took advantage of some powerful weak-side hitting by Sau and a gritty rotation by Alvarez in the left front to close the score. And over the next couple of rotations, they went ahead to a score of 15-14. But White River didn't panic, and after gaining a side out, they first tied the game, and then a side-out later managed to reverse the advantage. Mt. Rainier sided out, and brought the game to a 16-16 tie. But after several more side-outs, the Hornets (White River,) prevailed, wining 18-16. This defeat seemed to take the wind out of the Ram's sails, and the second and third games were not closely contested. The Hornet's Shealun Campisi (#7) served some hard low floaters in both games to score long runs. The Rams were not able to respond, hitting a number of serves into the net. Final result, White River is the 2002 Seamount Volleyball Champion, 18-16, 15-2, 15-5. Wednesday Crossover Matches, 7 pm
