Nov. 6th, 2003:  The West Central District organization decided to seed Sequim as #3 and North Mason as #10 irrespective of their actual finish within the Nisqually League.  This led to the following loser-out rounds on Thursday:

bulletHighline defeated Lindbergh at Columbia Jr. HS, 25-15, 25-12, 25-16.
bulletWashington defeated Clover Park at Fife, 25-14, 25-15, 25-17.

Two matches of the first round of the double elimination were also played last night:

bulletWashington defeated Sequim at Fife, 23-25, 25-14, 15-25, 25-15, 16-14.

The Washington victory is the first upset of the tournament, Sequim having been assigned the 3rd seed, and Washington the 6th seed.

Saturday's 9am matches are thus:

bulletWhite River versus Peninsula.
bulletKennedy versus Mt. Rainier.

At noon, the first round of the loser's bracket will be played.  Sequim is matched against the loser of the Kennedy Mt. Rainier match on Court 1, and Highline will play the loser of the White River/Peninsula match on Court 2.  The losers of these matches are out.

Postseason:  Crossovers and Districts

Nov. 5, 2003:  The Crossover were played at Renton High School on Nov. 1st in an unheated gym.  In addition to the biting cold, parking was a huge problem for the first round.  The gates to the parking lots were locked, and the street signs said "No Parking 8 am - 4 pm".  Fortunately, the gates were unlocked and/or signs were posted in time to help the fans and teams of the second round.  But heat was never restored to the gym.  The Pierce division teams swept the crossovers (see below.)

As this is being written, the seeds for the Nisqually League teams are still unknown.  Sequim finished second in league behind 2A Steilacoom, and North Mason will finish either 4th or 5th in League depending upon the outcome of tonight's match between Chimacum and Port Townsend.  If Chimacum wins the match, they finish 4th in Nisqually, and North Mason is 5th.  If they lose, North Mason is 4th.

The Nisqually teams should therefore be placed either in seed 6 and 10 (North Mason 4th,) or 6 and 12 (North Mason 5th.)  There is some confusion as to what will actually happen tomorrow afternoon.  But the issues are pretty straight forward, and hopefully the situation will be resolved along the lines of the tournament rules published in October.

Although who the seeds are won't be known until the Chimacum/Port Townsend results are available, the time and place of the first round matches based on seed number is known.  These are summarized below for all the Thursday matches:

The West Central District staff has posted a map link for Columbia Jr. High School.  The school appears to be about a half mile south of Fife High School, and should be very easy to find.  The street address (from the map) is:

Nisqually League Standings

Oct. 30, 2003:  The 3A schools in the Nisqually League, Sequim and North Mason, are seeded into the West Central District Tournament according to their finish within their League.  A first place garners them the 3rd seed, second place the 6th seed, third place the 8th seed, fourth place the 10th seed, and 5th place the 12th seed.

Sequim has now played all 13 League matches and finishes League play with a 12-1 record.  Its one loss being to Steilacoom.  Thus it appears that if Steilacoom wins its last match with Foster on Nov. 3rd that Sequim will finish in second place behind Steilacoom.  North Mason is presently in fourth place behind Vashon Island, and can at best finish with an identical match record of 8-5.  However, Vashon Island defeated North Mason on Oct. 8th, so one would presume that Vashon Island would finish 3rd and North Mason 4th.  The other two teams with records similar to North Mason are Orting and Chimacum.   North Mason defeated Orting on Sept. 29th, so Orting would finish below North Mason in the event of a 7-6 match record tie.  North Mason is thus assured of 4th place if it can beat Chimacum on Nov. 4th, or if Chimacum loses either one of its other two matches..

Oct. 25, 2003:  The Pierce Division will play two matches on Monday, Oct. 27th.  Lakes will host Clover Park in a match that should decide the Pierce Division's 5th place, and Franklin Pierce will play at Washington.  Tuesday will see all eight King Division teams in action, with only the final three positions still to be determined (see standings in article below.)  White River will play at Fife on Wednesday, with the Pierce Division title still undecided.  If White River wins, then they will be the Pierce Division champions.  If Fife wins, then each team will have 11-1 records.  This would create an interesting situation since they would have split their regular season matches as well.  In the past they would share the Divisional title and the seeding for post season play would be based on a coin-flip.  Current League rules seem to suggest that the seeding would be based on game- and point records.  Should this prospective tie be broken based on games won/lost, White River would have the edge.

The League Crossovers will be held at Renton High School on Saturday, November 1st.  The crossovers will be played in descending order (5th will be played first, etc.), and the day's matches will finish with the League Championship probably at 6 pm.  The match-ups appear to be:

  1. Kennedy versus Pierce 1st (Fife or White River)
  2. Highline versus Pierce 2nd (Fife or White River)
  3. Mt. Rainier versus Washington
  4. Hazen versus Peninsula
  5. Lindbergh versus Lakes or Clover Park

We will update this with the match format and times when they are available.

Standings with Tuesday's matches yet to go:

  1. Kennedy, 12-1, at Hazen.

There are no possible ranking changes in the top five.  Kennedy has defeated Highline twice, Highline has defeated Mt. Rainier twice, Hazen can't catch Mt. Rainier, and Hazen defeated Lindbergh twice.  However, the 6th through 8th places are still very much in play.  Evergreen split with Renton and lost twice to Tyee.  Tyee defeated Renton in their first encounter with a 15-12 fifth-game match victory.

Oct. 12, 2003:  With Mt. Rainier's upset victory over Kennedy on Friday night, the race for the top two spots in the King Division has become very interesting.  The seeding into the twelve-team West Central Districts (Nov. 7th and 8th) is such that the first two finishers in the King and Pierce Divisions will not have to play in the loser-out first round.  As things now stand, Kennedy and Highline are tied for first with 8-1 records, and Mt. Rainier is in the undesirable 3rd spot with a 7-2 record.  Kennedy and Highline play each other this coming Tuesday (Oct. 14th) at Highline, and the losing team is likely to find itself in a tie with Mt. Rainier following that match.  Then Highline has to play Mt. Rainier on Friday, Oct. 24th.  So almost anything can happen from this point.  We could have a three-way tie for first, we could have a nice clean 1-2-3 finish, or one of the rapidly improving lower-division teams could stage an upset of its own.

And the Pierce Division Races are also Close ...

And in the Pierce Division, Washington is scheduled to play at Fife tomorrow night, Monday, Oct. 13th.  Fife, with a 6-1 record, would seem to have a comfortable hold on second, but if Washington (4-3) wins, then Fife will have two losses going into its match with White River later this month, and in that case the second and third spots in the Pierce Division could be at stake.

2003 has already seen some remarkable upsets, and it might even be remembered as the "Year of the Cubs".  If Chicago can do it, who knows!!  Stay tuned!

bulletHighline defeated Renton, 26-24, 25-17, 25-12.

Bremerton Hosts 1st Tournament of the Year

7 Sept. 2003:  Roger Thomas of Bremerton High School hosted a Varsity and JV tournament on Saturday, Sept. 6th.  The JV's played at Bremerton Junior High School, and the Varsity played at Bremerton and nearby (across the street from the track,) Olympic College.  All matches were best two of three.   In Varsity play, Yelm finished first in the 3A pool, followed by Mt. Rainier, North Mason, and Lindbergh.  In the 4A pool, Stadium took first, followed by Bremerton, Lincoln and Port Angeles.

The finals were single matches with the pairings based on pool finish.  Yelm defeated Stadium to take First Place overall, Mt. Rainier defeated host Bremerton and thus finished 3rd, Lincoln defeated North Mason in an exciting match that went to the third game, and Port Angeles defeated Lindbergh, also in three.  Moana Sau, Senior middle hitter on the Mt. Rainier team, received favorable comments from all her opponents for both her formidable offensive play, and her tenacious defense.  The Yelm team served really tough, passed well, and played solid defense behind a tall front line.  The Yelm/Mt. Rainier pool match went to a third game, and both teams had several opportunities to win the match.

The coaches all expressed their appreciation to host Bremerton for making this initial shakedown cruise possible.  The teams at this tournament were relatively "young", no more than two or three returning lettermen on most of the 3A teams, for example, and it was great to get this early experience.  It was also interesting to see how the officials handled the revised "first ball double hit" rule.  Beginning this year, the "finger action" prohibition on first-ball contacts has been removed.   At yesterday's tournament,  lot of first-ball "lifts" were called, suggesting that the high school rule will be interpreted a little tighter than the counterpart USAV-JOV rule.

Status of Season & Jamboree Schedules

27 August 2003:  At the Seamount Coaches meeting the Divisional schedules were slightly modified, and the King Division Jamboree was scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10th,  with Tyee High School hosting the Varsity and Mt. Rainier the JV.  Details are available on the Seamount Schedule page.

7 Sept. 2003:  The schedule of play at the Mt. Rainier JV Jamboree has been revised and it now provides one game against four opponents.  The play could not start until 4:30 pm, and with the original schedule, the last round of games was to start at 9 pm, which was thought to be too late.  With the new schedule, play should end by 8:30 pm, and everyone should be home by 9 pm.  Please see the revised schedule on the Seamount Schedule page.
