Team Award Voting ... A Few Players Still to Vote

Nov. 9th, 2004:  The vote counts for Most Inspirational, Most Improved, and Most Valuable for the Varsity, JV, and C-teams are still awaiting a few players who have not turned in all of their uniform items.  Coach Stewart contacted most of the players this weekend who need to turn something in.  If you are one of these players please bring your items to the gym at 2:30 pm on Monday.  We need to complete the voting and order the awards.

All-League Honors

Congratulations to Senior Captains Sara Fentress and Nela Thomas who were selected to the King Division's All League Second Team.  Sara's great setting and her leadership by example were critical elements in our team's success this year.  Nela provided the explosive punch we needed in our victories over Mt. Rainier and Franklin Pierce.  And in our last match against Clover Park she played her heart out, scoring 13 kills, twelve of which were in the last three pressure-packed games.  Senior Libero Tiffany Wong and Sophomore Middle Blocker Chelsea Mackner were selected for All League Honorable mention.  Tiffany provided some superb serve receive throughout the season.  Against Clover Park, she averaged over 80% "great passes" and she passed nearly 40% of our opponent's serves over the season.  Chelsea improved through the year.  Her best showing was against Franklin Pierce where she scored 6 kills and shut down our opponent's middle offense with 5 stuff blocks late in the match.

Awards Banquet, Nov. 16th

Oct. 27th, 2004:  The Awards Banquet will be held on November 16th, Tuesday, in the Cafeteria from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.  We will honor our players with a variety of team, League, and WIAA honors.  The format is a pot luck, and all players and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Parent Meeting, Oct. 28th, 6:30 pm

Oct. 27th, 2004:  Parents and players interested in post-season play are encouraged to attend.  We will provide information on club opportunities including contact information and approximate costs.  We will also do some additional planning for the Awards Banquet which will be a pot luck in the school cafeteria on November 16th from 6:30 pm to 9 pm.

Match Recaps

Clover Park (10/25).  Two very tough matches mark the end of our season.  It was sad to lose, but we played as teams, and everyone contributed.
bullet

Varsity: 2-3, 25-18, 18-25, 27-29, 26-24, 13-15

bullet

JV: 1-2, 25-16, 22-25, 11-15

Franklin Pierce (10/19).  Varsity kept alive their hopes of an invite to the West Central District Tournament.  JV's played well, C's started rough, but finished well.
bullet

Varsity: 3-2, 25-9, 26-28, 22-25, 25-18, 15-2

bullet

JV:  2-1, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13

bullet

C:  0-3, 8-25, 19-25, 13-15 (third game non-deciding ... again we spotted our opponent a ton of points (17) in game 1.)

bullet

Varsity:  3-1, 14-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-13

bullet

JV: 0-3, 12-25, 16-15, 11-15

bullet

C:  0-3, 9-25, 8-25, 3-15

We had a couple of highlights in our matches at the Kennedy tonight.  The C and JV teams were a bit overwhelmed, but when we were able to control Kennedy's serve, we did well.  The Varsity passed serve well, but not everyone was willing to give the match their best effort.  It was easy to say that we were a little shorthanded, but that wasn't the issue.  Every player who played hard succeeded.  But not everyone played hard.  We should all now understand the essential truth in the old saw "Winners never quit, and quitters never win."

Mt. Rainier(10/5) ... Varsity puts in a super all-around effort ... and stays in hunt for Districts.  JV's lose after exciting comeback.
bullet

Varsity: 3-1, 25-21, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20

bullet

C:  2-0, 25-15, 26-24, 10-15 (3rd game non-deciding)

Hazen (9/23) ... JV's win, Varsity runs out of gas.  "C"'s struggle in 3rd match of year.

JV:  2-0, 25-18, 25-19 (3rd game non-deciding)

bullet

C:  0-3, 6-25, 16-25, 14-16 ... we got much better after an 0-18 start in game one.

Evergreen (9/21) ... Varsity and JV's win ... everyone pitched in ... good job all around.

Mt. Rainier on Tuesday, C Players at Concession Stand

Oct. 3, 2004:  Mt. Rainier will pay us a visit this coming Tuesday.  They are currently 5-3 with losses to Franklin Pierce, White River, and Kennedy.  They do not have a "C" team.  The "C"'s will help scorekeep and call lines for the JV match as well as help the Booster club with the concession stand.  The following is the work schedule for the concession stand:

The shifts overlap, and the players may make arrangements with each other for early departure provided the staffing needs are met at the stand.  Ashley and Alaska are also going to be needed for scorekeeping duties in the JV game.

The "C" team will also assemble the remaining candy leis after practice on Wednesday beginning at 4 pm.

Sept. 28, 2004:  No "C" practice on Wednesday, Sept. 29.  The bus will leave at 3:30 pm, be in the lower parking lot at 3:15 pm.

Special note:  Congratulations to Jennie Turner who has been promoted to Varsity.

Sept. 24, 2004:  We play Lakes at home on Monday, and Washington at Washington on Wednesday.  Washington High School is located very close to Pacific Lutheran University, about three miles east of exit 127 off I-5.  With travel, the Wednesday match will be a long one.  Both these matches are very important for the Varsity.  Be sure to take care of all your homework on Sunday to minimize the disruption to your class work of the Monday and Wednesday matches.

Sept. 24, 2004:  The Boosters Club has asked us to help with the concession stand at our home games.  We will have signups for the remaining four home matches at practice today.  The daily work schedule will be:

bullet

4:45 pm - 6:30 pm:  Two or more varsity players are needed to help set up the stand and to sell during the matches.  If our opponent for that day's match does not have a "C" team, then "C" players will perform the work.

bullet

6:30 pm - 7:00 pm:  Varsity parents if available, or "C" players if no opponent.

bullet

7:00 pm  to 30 minutes after the last game:  Two or more JV or "C" players to help sell and cleanup.

The work can be shared.  That is, several players can signup up for one time slot.

The home match schedule is:

bullet

Monday, Sept. 27th, vs Lakes

bullet

Tuesday, Oct. 5th, vs Mt. Rainier (No C)

bullet

Monday, Oct. 11th, vs White River

bullet

Tuesday, Oct. 19th, vs Franklin Pierce

The Boosters have been quite helpful this year with a donation of $300.  This isn't enough to get us the shorts we need, but it is a good start.  We still have some candy that can be sold, and if we can raise another $150 from candy sales, then we will go ahead and order the shorts.  We will talk about this at a team meeting at 4 pm this afternoon.

The "C" team also needs to raise $50 for the entry fee to the Kennedy "C" tournament on Oct. 16th.  The other tournaments have all been paid for.

Eastside Catholic Tournament Schedule

Sept. 10, 2004:  The schedule for the Eastside Tournament has been revised due to the withdrawal of the Roosevelt HS team.  We have the following schedule:

Depart LHS:  7:35 am

Arrive Eastside Catholic HS:  8:00 am

9:00 am Play Yelm

10:00 am Play RA Long

Noon:  Play Liberty

2:00 pm:  Play Eastside Catholic

Playoffs:  Schedule for 3 pm and 4 pm.  The tournament should be over by 5 pm.

Sept. 5 2004:  We received the schedule for next Saturday's Varsity Tournament at Eastside Catholic.  Please download the pdf version from this link:  (link removed due to schedule revision ... see above.)

The bus will leave Lindbergh at 7:35 am.  Concessions will be available at Eastside Catholic, but players should bring several bottles of water, and some "high quality" snacks.  The courts are fairly small, and there will be no stands, so viewing will be limited for parents.  But we have a full schedule with a guarantee of five matches.  This should be a really great event.

League Play Begins Tuesday at Peninsula

Sept. 5, 2004:  The bus will leave Lindbergh at 2:45 pm on Tuesday, with the hope of arriving at Peninsula around 4:30 pm.  Since you will not be able to eat an early dinner in preparation for our competition (which may last from 5:45 pm until 9:30 pm for some of our players) please bring a sandwich, something to drink, and some fruit.  If we arrive as early as expected, we will have ample time before the "C" and JV matches to eat the food, and this will be important as we play into the evening.  This is especially true for the girls who will swing up from JV to play a game or two on Varsity.

The address for Peninsula High School is:

    14105 Purdy Dr NW

     Gig Harbor, WA

    (Office phone:  253-857-3530)

The Gig Harbor address may be a bit confusing.  The school is actually on the west side of the Tacoma Narrows/Bremerton freeway (Hwy 16), and is located on the upper tip of Carr Inlet, not in Gig Harbor.  This is a link to a Mapquest map that you may find helpful:

    Peninsula High School Map

Parents wishing to drive down to see the "C" and JV matches will find the rush hour traffic on the Tacoma Narrows bridge a real problem.  "Allow an extra hour or so" more than what you think it should take is what we have been advised.  The start of the Varsity match is 7:00 pm, which is a bit after rush hour, but if you are driving down for that match you should still plan on some delays (the match should start approximately on time depending upon the completion of the JV and C matches.)

Optional "C" Practice Saturday and Monday

Jamboree At Renton on Wednesday!

Aug. 31, 2004:  We elected Team Captains at today's practice.  Congratulations to the following athletes for earning their team-mates' and coaches' respect and confidence:

Varsity:  Nela Thomas, Sara Fentress

JV:  Katherine Sun, Justine Tynes

C Team:  Ashley Briskey, Alaska McGann

In order to qualify our "C" team roster for the Peninsula match on Tuesday, Sept. 7th, we will hold two practices for "C" players (and any other players needing the extra practices,) on Saturday, Sept. 4th from 8 am to 9 am, and Monday, Sept. 6th from 7 pm to 8 pm.  Please confirm with Coach Stewart if you plan to attend.

Jamboree:  The Varsity and JV Jamborees will be held at Renton tomorrow, Sept. 1st.  Our teams begin play at 3:30 pm, and finish around 7 pm.  We have requested a bus for the team which will depart Lindbergh at 2:30 pm in the lower parking lot.  We should return to Lindbergh by 7:30 pm.  Please pick up your daughter in the lower parking lot where the bus will drop the team off, and where we will await your arrival.  We were notified that the Seamount League will charge admission at the Jamboree, $3 for adults, and $2 for students.

Roster Updates and Jamboree

Aug. 29, 2004:  With the additional turn-out last week, with the good showing of the "C" team against the JV Team in Saturday's intra-squad scrimmage, and with the results of an additional week of practice, we have been able to make some promotions within our squads.  Jessica has been promoted from Junior Varsity to Varsity, and Donna, Kaylee and Vanessa have been promoted to Junior Varsity from "C".  Congratulations girls and work hard!

We learned this weekend that the most likely date for the Jamboree is Wednesday, Sept. 1st.  If it isn't on Wednesday then it should still be on Thursday.  And Renton High School is still the host.  Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity will play, and they will have the same schedule.  Lindbergh's schedule will be:

    3:30 pm:  Evergreen

    4:00 pm:  Kennedy

    4:30 pm:  Mt. Rainier

    5:30 pm:  Tyee

    6:30 pm:  Renton

The bus will leave Lindbergh at 2:30 pm, and we will return to school at 7:30 pm (following our last matches.)  All players will attend.  Those players who have not completed their 10 WIAA practices will serve as linespersons and scorers.

Parent Volunteers

Dave Ransdell has volunteered to make the team program for a second year.  Thank you Dave.  We also need parents with some club experience to help us train our scorers.   The score sheet used by the High Schools is simpler than the USAV version, and a parent with some knowledge of the Referee's signals and procedures would be of great help to us.  We also need a "golden voiced" announcer to perform the opening ceremonies.  This person could be a student or a parent.  Please contact Coach Stewart if you would like to participate.

Jamboree Date Still Uncertain

Aug. 24, 2004:  We are still awaiting confirmation of the date of the Jamboree for the King Division Varsity and JV teams.  Please check back here in a couple of days.  Also, the time for the JV practice has been revised and is now 2-4 pm this Thursday and Friday.

Team Selection

Aug. 22, 2004:  The Varsity, Junior Varsity and "C" Teams have been selected.  The rosters are posted at the gym.  Monday's practice schedule begins with an "all-hands" clinic from 9 to 11 am, followed by "C" and JV practices from 2-4, and Varsity practice from 4-6 pm.  We have room for several more players, so late-turnouts are welcome.  As we discussed at practice on Friday, we expect to make a number of promotions from "C" to JV and JV to Varsity over the course of the season.  Late comers have now missed three practices, but with hard work and diligence, they should be able to catch up with the rest of us.  The important thing is to turn-out as soon as possible.

The schedule has been been revised to include a practice on Saturday morning, August 28th (intra-squad scrimmage and parent meeting,) and Varsity and Junior Varsity Jamborees at Renton on either Wednesday, Sept. 1st, or Thursday, Sept. 2nd.  All players who have completed 10 practices by the day of the Jamboree will participate.  This means a number of "C" players will play with the JV team, and a few JV players may be bumped up to play with the Varsity team (both teams will play at the same time at Renton.)  Each team will play one game against five other King Division schools.  The schedule is not known at this point, but in past Jamborees we either played from 4 until 7:30 pm, or 5:00 to 8:30 pm.  The games will be scheduled at half-hour intervals, and we will have two half-hour breaks in the course of play.

First Day of Practice ... Good Job All

Aug. 18, 2004:  It was fun seeing everyone once again this morning, and our new floor makes the gym look just great.  Mrs. Clark was extremely helpful completing some last-minute clearances that gave us a nearly complete roster of last year's players.  We are a little short of ninth graders, but we have the nucleus of a good Freshman team, and perhaps some more players will turnout once they realize that our season has been pushed ahead a week.

Tomorrow afternoon's practice (Thursday, August 19) will have the Setter's, Liberos, and Defensive Specialists in the 1 pm to 3 pm session, and the Middle Blockers/Outside Hitters/Opposites in the 3 pm to 5 pm session.  The morning session is 9 am to 11 am and it will be a setting and blocking clinic, plus a review of today's skills.

Car Wash a Great Success, Clearances Next ...

Aug. 16,2004:  The car wash was a super success.  Thank you Donna, Tiffany, Sam, Justine, Ariana, Janna, Sara, Jackie, Kaylee, Raya, Ashley, Mari, Sonia, Gemma, and Ashley- and Mari's friends for all your hard work (and of course thank you to all the parents who made this possible by juggling their summer schedules to let their daughters participate.)  With Saturday's fund raiser, we've paid for the first round of the Varsity, JV, and "C" tournaments.  Now it is on to the jerseys, shorts, and game equipment.   And please note that we have really benefited from the use of Domino's parking lot.  Next time your family orders a pizza from Domino's please be sure to mention that you appreciate their support of our volleyball team.

A couple of girls at this evening's conditioning practice said they were surprised at the fees they were asked to pay.  The school fees are $30 for the ASB card, $50 for the sports fee, and $60 for the Yearbook order.  If this is a problem for anyone, then please let me know.  The most important thing right now is that you get at least a temporary clearance for practice.  Depending upon the circumstances, the Athletic Director can help you with the fees.  But if you miss practice, then you risk being unable to make the team selection.  No one wants an athlete to miss participation in a varsity sport due to financial issues.  Please contact Coach Stewart as soon as possible if things seem really hopeless.  Remember, you can always pay the fees later, but you must practice now.  (Call Coach Stewart at 206-248-1583 or email him at bobjstewart@att.net.)  Also note that any athlete who completes clearance by August 20th will be able to complete her mandatory 10 practices in time for the opening match against Peninsula on September 7th.  So if you run into problems on the 18th, don't quit.  Time is on your side for a few more days!

Car Wash at Domino's

Aug. 7, 2004:  Rich at Domino's said we can use their parking lot next Saturday for our car wash.  Please contact Coach Stewart to set your hours.  We will begin set-up at 9:30 am, and we should be finished by 3 pm.  Our goal is to get enough to cover our first three tournaments ... say $420.   Our next fund raiser will be to buy some new jerseys.

Don't forget that the Lindbergh Clearance Night is August 10th, and our first practice is Wednesday, August 18th, less than two weeks away!

Conditioning for Turnout

Aug. 4, 2004:  A group of us are meeting at the Lindbergh weight room at 5 pm each week-night to do conditioning.  We're doing some plyometric jumps, pulldowns, presses, running stairs, tossing medicine balls, and generally improving our strength for the season.  We have nine more evenings before our first day of practice, so drop by when you can.  This will all pay-off in the coming weeks as we use our improved strength to jump higher, dig with more control, and serve tougher.

Tuesday Clinic Start Time Changed

July 27, 2004:  At the request of our League players, this evening's clinic will begin at 6 pm.  If you can't make it until 7 pm, don't worry about it.  We'll run a second "wave", with 45 minutes of scrimmage beginning at 7:15 pm with both the 6- and 7 pm arrivals participating.  The second wave will go until 9 pm if interest warrants.

We played well Monday night, with Kaylee providing some super steady serving to close out game two against Bellevue.  This is our last week of clinics and League play.  The WIAA "no practice" period begins on August 1st, and continues until the first day of tryouts, August 18th.  We will be doing conditioning at the Lindbergh weight room in this period, but no volleyball.  Check here for the schedule.  We are also planning a car wash for either this Saturday (August 1st) or the following Saturday, August 8th.  The location will be announced. These fund raisers will be used to pay for tournament entree fees and new jerseys.  So plan on attending at least part of the day.

July 27, 2004:  We have added the Sept. 11th Eastside Catholic Varsity tournament to our schedule.

Wednesday Matches Moved to Kentlake

July 21, 2004:  The gym at Kentwood High School will be without power this evening due to construction, so the League has been moved to Kentlake High School for the night.  The link below is a map to Kentlake High School.  You will see that it is about 3 miles east and one mile further south than Kentwood.  From Kentwood High School, go south on 164th to 272nd (Hwy 516.)  Turn left and go about three miles to 216th Ave. SE.  Turn right (south) and go about one and a half miles.  The road curves to the left (east) beyond the merge with SE Covington-Sawyer Road.  Look for SE 300th Street and turn right.  If the road bends to the right and you get to 224th Ave SE you have gone a few blocks too far.

MSN MapPoint Link to Kentlake HS

July League and Clinics Underway

July 13, 2004:  We've completed three nights of league play at Kentwood High School.  Our younger players are making good progress in the area of transitions and court positioning, and we are getting a lot of practice on serve receive.  The highlights so far include Nela's hitting, our defense, some great serving efforts by Sara, Tiffany, Marie and Nela, and Mari has managed a couple of good blocks in the middle.

The plans to refinish the floors at Lindbergh have been delayed, and as a result we have access to the gym during July.  We are holding clinics on Tuesday and Thursday nights for our squad members and for incoming Freshmen.

Summer League Begins July 5th

June 11, 2004:  The season schedule has been updated to show the July Summer League.

An unforeseen event has taken Coach Stewart to California for the first part of next week, so Coach Aio will conduct the clinics Monday through Thursday.  Due to a prior commitment, Coach Aio will not be able to hold the clinic on Wednesday, so that session has been cancelled.  Remember to download the Medical Information and Waiver form and the Kentwood Summer League Waiver form, and fill both of them out to give to Coach Aio.  Coach Aio will also have some Renton School District forms for new players (incoming 9th graders and players who did not participate in a school sport this year.)  Links to the waiver forms are in the June 9th article immediately below.

June 9, 2004:  We had a great sign-up this afternoon, and our entry to the Kentwood Summer League has been accepted.  Our first match will be on July 5th, and our schedule for that night is:

6 pm:  Ref match between Tahoma and Kentlake
7 pm: Play Tahoma (Kentlake refs)
8 pm: Play Kentlake (Tahoma refs)

The schedule is such that we will always ref the 6pm match.  This may work out well for some of you who had conflicts in the early evening.  The other play dates are:  Wednesday, July 7th; and then Monday/Wednesday thru the rest of the month.  The complete schedule will be posted here in the next day or two.

For those of you who came late, the Medical Information and Waiver form for Lindbergh may be downloaded from this link:

Lindbergh Medical Information and Waiver form

The Kentwood Summer League Waiver also needs to be completed, so download this form, fill it out, have your parent or guardian sign it, and bring it to practice:

Kentwood Summer League Waiver

This is going to be a lot of fun.  We'll work out carpools and finalize our match rosters during our afternoon clinics next week.  Let's really work hard!

May 28, 2004:  We will begin three weeks of clinics on Tuesday of next week.  Be at the gym at 2:30, ready to go.  We will finish each session with a weight room circuit from 4:00 to 4:30.

The Puget Sound Region's list of summer camps is now posted at this link:

http://www.pugetsoundvb.org/jdivision/junior.htm#Summer_Camps

Please look it over.  With our gym closed for refinishing in early July, we will need to find some other places to practice and play.  The list includes camps, clinics, leagues and tournaments that might be of interest.

May 25, 2004:  We will have our second and final open gym this evening, Tuesday night, from 5:30-7:30 pm, probably in the lower gym.  The volleyball clinics begin on June 1st, running from 2:30 to 4 pm, right after school.  Check the schedule (below) for any last minute changes.

The following pdf file contains our schedule for the 2004 season.  Parents and players are encouraged to download it.  However, the schedule will be modified and updated fairly often, so please be sure to check back here for the latest version.

2004 Lindbergh Schedule  (latest revision: 6/11/04)

May 13, 2004:  The Lindbergh Eagle Volleyball team met today to begin the 2004 Season.  Fund raising activities that were mentioned included car washes, selling all kind of stuff, a boys and youth volleyball league, and (perhaps) an elementary school league in the closing weeks of this school year.    Our plans for the coming Fall season were discussed, including the 2004 schedule that will take us to Peninsula, Fife, Washington, Clover Park and four of our King Division opponents (Tyee, Kennedy, Hazen and Renton.)  Justine submitted a sketch of sweat-shirts (and pants) for the fall season.  We also discussed the possibility of a June volleyball league with some other high schools.

We had a great turnout for this meeting.  Returning Captain and 2nd Team All Seamount League (King Division) Nela Thomas made the arrangements for the meeting.  As we got started, she had to make two trips to the copy machine to make sure everyone got a copy of the information and contact sheets.

We will be doing some conditioning beginning next week, and in June we will start our summer program of clinics and development camps.   Please check back at this site for the latest news on open gyms and team activities.

Let's work hard now so that we can accomplish some great things this Fall!
