Team Banquet Monday November 21stNov. 3, 2005: The Team Banquet will be held in the Cafeteria on Monday, November 21st, with setup beginning at 6 pm, and dinner beginning around 6:30 pm. The banquet is a pot luck, with the following assignments by team:
Seniors are asked to bring plates, cups, and "silverware" . Each player is asked to bring enough of their assigned menu items to serve seven or eight people.
Thursday, October 27th, Tie-BreakerOct. 30, 2005: The Tie-Breakers at Kennedy turned out to be our final matches of the season. As expected, based on the results of the regular season, the matches were close, and the teams were evenly matched. We played Hazen first, and we started off slowly. After the first complete round of rotations, we had fallen behind Hazen by a score of 5-14. But we kept battling, and closed the score to 16-21, then 20-23, and finally 22-24. But we weren't able to complete the comeback, and Hazen won 25-22. We kept our momentum at the start of the second game, and after the first round of rotations, we were one point back of Hazen 11-12, which is a big improvement over 5-14. But our concentration wasn't as solid as it needed to be, and Hazen was able to run off a two or three points in most of their next five serving opportunities to win the game and the match. Hazen then went on to defeat Evergreen 25-11, 25-18, which earned them the King Division 4th seed. Hazen's two victories meant that the winner of our match with Evergreen in the final contest of the evening would earn the fifth and final Divisional seed to Districts. Our match with Evergreen was very close. In the first game, neither team led by more than a point until Jennie served for the second time. Then with a Kill by Jessica (a wipe off the Evergreen block out of bounds) and an error by Evergreen, we opened our lead to 15-11. Evergreen managed a sideout, but we held onto that lead for the next several rotations. Then Evergreen's #4 (Tiera Lanier) got some great sets and was able to score several times to our deep right corner. With this momentum Evergreen stormed back to take the lead 20-18. But we kept our poise, and tied the game at 22. Tied, and Jennie serving, we scored a point with a Kill by Chelsea (a chip to the middle of the court,) and got another point off an error by Evergreen. Evergreen got the serve back with a Kill, but then made a serving error to give us the game. The second game started off horribly. Perhaps we thought Evergreen was going to roll over. But they were determined to reverse the outcome of the first game and it showed. We passed well, and the sets were generally ok, but each player on the floor, everyone, managed to hit a ball into the net, or was blocked, or hit the ball out of bounds. We called a time out at 0-7, but the bleeding didn't stop until the Evergreen server served out on her 10th attempt. With the score 1-9, we began battling, and to our credit we did not quit. But we were too late. We closed the score to 12-18, 14-21, and 19-24, but that was as close as we got. The third and deciding game started off badly (again.) We fell behind 0-4 before calling a timeout. We managed a sideout, and then with Jennie serving we started to battle back. We closed the score to 4-5, but then Evergreen's #4 went to work once again, and Evergreen pulled ahead to a lead of three, 4-7. At that point our luck left us ... Marie, playing in the back row, injured her left elbow attempting to dig a middle attack. Lisa took Marie's place for the remainder of the back row (Dorothy was substituted in for Marie in the front row.) We managed to play sideout ball for the next four serves. But with the score 7-10, Evergreen began to pull away. But we didn't quit, and after a couple of sideouts for each team, Dorothy rotated into the back row and began to serve with the score 9-14. We played perfect ball for the next three points, and Evergreen called a timeout with the score 12-14. Dorothy made another great serve, but we lost the volley, and that ended our comeback. This was a hard loss, but we were fortunate to be able to play the extra matches. We never quit, and we played well against two quality teams. Evergreen went on to defeat Clover Park at the Cross-Overs to win the Seamount 9th seed, and Hazen, playing without either of their middles, managed to take a game off Lakes before losing their Cross-Over match for the 7th seed. I am especially proud of the way we kept battling. And it appears that Marie's elbow will be ok. So things aren't as bad as we might feel right now. If we think back on these two matches, we can see that we are capable of playing at a high level. But we are not yet able to do so steadily. The loss will be hardest on our Seniors, but these players can take pride in knowing that they did everything we asked of them, and often much more. For the rest of us, the challenge is to continue to get better for the next ten months. Next year, if we are diligent, we will be able to bring a few more "good DVD" memories to these pressure-packed matches, and with the increased experience and confidence, we will prevail.

The Varsity team won a critical match against Tyee on Thursday. The loss to Highline on Tuesday had dropped us to 4-6, tied with Hazen, and one game back of Evergreen, 5-5, in the race for the last two District invites. This made for a pressure-packed match. Additionally, Tyee has been improving steadily since we saw them three weeks ago, and they challenged us with some very tough serves. But we were able to prevail with a balanced attack, and won the match in three very closely fought games. Marie led the team with 6 Kills, 4 Aces, 2 Blocks and 3 digs. Alaska contributed 7 Digs and 2 Aces, and Jennie scored on 7 Aces while setting 14 Assists and making 4 Digs. The win raised the Varsity's season record to 5-6 with three matches left in League play. The JV's won in two. Bridgette put in a solid all around effort, capped with a perfect serving record. The JV's are now 9-2 in League play.
The Varsity improved in its second match against Highline, but our passing just wasn't good enough to let us get our offense going. Our left side and middle defenders, led by Alaska with 9 Digs, did a much better job of digging Highline's outside attack, and Chelsea provided a lot of firepower from both the front and back row. But our offense was too predictable, and Highline was able to outlast us in the volleys. The loss dropped Varsity to 4-6, tied with Hazen who lost their 10th round match to Kennedy the previous night.
The JV's lost in three, which means they split with Highline on the year. The match was as close as it could be ... being decided in the third game 15-13 in Highline's favor. Highline did not have a C team this year.

The seven player C team showed good improvement at the Alice Boyle tournament on Saturday. We had problems with consistency, but we were able to run a pass-set-spike offense against all our opponents, and everyone managed to get an Ace, or a Block or a Kill or several of each. The biggest problem was passing tough serves. The biggest improvement was our court play. We began to move from "home base" to our defensive assignments in response to the our opponent's point of attack. Maggie, Anne, and Donelyn all served some tough overhand serves for Aces against strong opponents, Reyna blocked and spiked for points, Ruby played great defense on the left hand side, Leila scored kills from front and back row, and passed like a champ, and Melissa played steadily giving us good passes, some decent hits, and showed good court coverage and front row blocking. After playing twelve games, we were a pretty tired team. It was also fun to get to know more about our new players. I was surprised to learn that English was the second language of several of our players. Can you guess who they are?

The Varsity put the pieces back together against a tough Evergreen team on Friday. We started off strong winning game one, but lost our focus in game two. Game three was a struggle, but we began to play with confidence towards the end. This carried over into game four, which we won with improved passing and better hitting. The deciding game five saw Marie and Chelsea come alive with tough serves and kills, and we won it with two powerful serves by Marie. Chelsea led the team with 10 Kills, 8 Aces, 3 Blocks, and 5 Digs, and some excellent serve receive. Marie pumped in 6 Aces, and Sammi and Alaska each served for 5 Aces. Jennie served for 2 Aces with 17 Assists. With this victory, the Varsity improved its record to 4-5, and we are still in the hunt for a seed to the West Central District Three Tournament. The JV's won in two, and are now 8-1 in League play.
The Varsity got off to a mixed start in the first game. Despite missing 4 out of 13 serves in our first seven rotations, we passed well and Sammi, Chelsea, Marie, and Alaska were all hitting well. The mixed effort gave us a lead of 18-9 and things were looking promising. But then we began to play tentatively. Three ball handling errors, two serve receive errors, five missed spikes, and a generally flat effort all around in the following six rotations allowed Hazen to tie the game at 23, and from there, the Highlanders won the game. The second game was a continuation of the same downward trend. We gave Hazen 12 points on hitting, passing and serving errors, and never managed to apply any pressure. The third game saw us come back from a big deficit to close the game to 23-24 with an Ace serve by Marie. But we weren't able to finish the rally, and Hazen won the game and the match. This drops us into a tie with Hazen for the fifth and final playoff spot for the District tourney with a record of 3-5. The JV's continued their winning ways with a third-game match win over the Highlander JV's, thus improving their league record to 7-1. The "C" team was much improved compared to a month ago. We had to learn how to play in a low gym in the first game, but we gave Hazen a good fight in the the second game once the rules were known.

The Varsity played their best volleyball of the year in our loss to Kennedy. Yielding only 7 points to Aces, while scoring 7 Aces, the match became an offensive slug fest. Nor surprisingly, Kennedy was steadier (one example, we missed 9 serves, and they missed 3,) and they won, but not before our Lady Eagles scored 23 points with spikes and 2 points with stuff blocks, and we blocked 8 other attacks, but not for points. Kennedy about doubled our output in these categories, but not for a lack of effort on our part. In game one, Chelsea got six sideouts with powerful front- and back row spiking, and she added six serve receives, four of which were in the good to perfect range. Chelsea finished the day with 9 Kills, 4 digs, 1.5 blocks (she combined with Justine for a stuff), and 10 good to perfect serve receives. Sammi also had a PR-type day, scoring on 2 Aces and 5 Kills while contributing defensively with 6 Digs. Jennie served for 2 Aces, scored on 1 Kill, and set for 17 Assists. The C and JV teams also fell to Kennedy. Both teams were able to play at the required level, but not steadily.
These were very promising matches. All our teams have made progress since the Jamboree just twenty-three days ago, and we have demonstrated that we can play winning volleyball. The key will be to translate these minutes of brilliance into steady efforts that last for games and matches.
For the first half of the season, the Varsity compiled a 3-4 record, JV's 6-1, and C's 1-2. The second round will be just as competitive as the first for the Varsity and JV, and the C's schedule will be much improved. The top five Varsity teams of the King Division will be invited to the District Championships, and we are currently in fifth place. The battle for District seeds will be fierce in the second round. By continuing to improve and by staying focused on each match, each game, and each point, we will be in good shape come October 29th. The JV's have seven more King Division matches plus our match with Nathan Hale which will probably be held on Oct. 21st at Lindbergh. The C's have had the first six weeks to get ready for the second half of the season which should prove to be a lot more interesting. Next week the C'sters play Hazen (Monday,) Evergreen (Friday,) and then they compete in the Alice Boyle tournament at Kennedy on Saturday. They will then play Renton, Nathan Hale, and Kennedy. Plans are afoot to hold another C Play Day which will give them another three or four matches.
The Varsity fell in three games to Mt. Rainier on Tuesday night before a modest home crowd. The team-play aspect of our game showed continued improvement, but we weren't able to score when we had the opportunity. Highlights included Marie's blocking and Jennie's setting and serving. There were a number of lessons to be learned from the video which we reviewed on Wednesday. The JV's won in two games, and remain undefeated in League play. The Friday match against Kennedy will pit our Varsity against the Division-leading Lancers at 6-0, and each JV team will enter Friday's contest with perfect 6-0 League records.
Monday, Sept. 26th, 2005: The C Team held its election for the 2005 Co-Captain position, and Maggie Ingram won on the first ballot. Congratulations Maggie!

The Varsity improved its League record to 3-2 with a 25-13, 25-13, 25-11 victory over Renton. The team continued to make progress with its passing, and both Kaylee and Jennie were able to run plays with the middle hitters. The team focus and intensity also showed improvement. And we had a great showing of parents, students, and alumni to cheer us on. The JV's won their match, as did the "C" team. This was the second match of the season for the "C"'s, and they are now 1-1. They are showing remarkable improvement in all of the fundamentals. Their next match will be on Friday, September 30th, against Kennedy. The JV's remain undefeated in League play, with a record of 5-0. The JV's and the Varsity will face two strong opponents next week when Mt. Rainier and Kennedy come to our gym for the final matches in the first round of the Divisional round robin. The Varsity match against Mt. Rainier on Tuesday will likely be a battle for third place in the Division. It should be a great event. We don't know how the Mt. Rainier JV's have done so far, but they have traditionally been a strong team. Unfortunately, Mt. Rainier does not have a "C" team, so our "C"'s will be idle. Friday's visit by Kennedy will see some great volleyball for all three teams.
The Varsity evened its League record at 2-2 with a four game victory over Tyee. Standouts for the match were Marie Batschi with 14 Kills, including the match-winning slider to the deep corner, 3 Aces and 2 Blocks; Jennie Turner with 15 Assists and 3 Kills; and Chelsea Mackner who ran off 8 Aces and led the Eagles defensively with 6 Digs. The JV's won in two games, and remain undefeated in League play.

The JV's continued their winning ways at the Mariner High School JV Tournament on Saturday, September 17th. Arriving with just enough time to warm-up, and seeded 2nd in Pool C, the JV's faced 4th seeded Mariner H. S. in the 8 am round of pool play. We lost both games to a tough serving, hard spiking, good passing Mariner team. This was a rough start to the day, and we were concerned that if the Mariner JV's were the fourth seed, what would the first and third seeds look like? But things began to improve when when we split with 3rd-seeded Kings West in our second round of pool play. We lost the first game after committing too many service and spiking errors, but Mari did a super job of serving and blocking in the early part of the second game, allowing us to move ahead of KW by several points. They closed the scores at 20, but with tough serves and good play we surged ahead to take a close win. The pools traded courts after the third round of play, and our last match was against 1st-seeded Anacortes in the large gym. This was the final round of pool play, and by this time Mariner had won 1st place in Pool C compiling a game record of 6-0, Anacortes was 2-2, Kings West was 1-5, and we were 1-3. So we were in a pressure-packed situation. We had to win both games to take second place in pool and earn a seed in the Gold Division, and it was still possible for us to finish 4th in our pool if we lost both games. But we responded to the challenge and continued to serve tough and played tenacious volleyball, and thus managed to take both games off Anacortes. Everyone contributed, but Ashley Goodwin's setting allowed Mari, Dorothy and Amber to score a number of Kills that put Anacortes at a disadvantage. We faced Marysville-Pillchuck in the first round of the Gold Division playoffs, and we found that we could volley with them, but their serves were just too tough. The games saw some long volleys and a fair number of sideout exchanges, but when the big guns for Marysville started serving they would run off 3 or 4 points at a time. And we couldn't catch up.The final results for the Mariner JV Tournament:
| Gold Division | Silver Division |
| 1. Central Kitsap 2. Sequim T3. Marysville T3. Cascade T5. Lindbergh T5. Mariner T5. Arch. Bishop Murphy T5. Nathan Hale |
1. Kings West 2. Lakewood T3 Granite Falls T3 Black Hills T5 Sedro Wooley T5 Anacortes T5. Bellingham T5 Eastside Catholic |
The JV's first began attending the Mariner Tournament two years ago. The first year we lost all our games. Last year we managed to win one game, but our overall finish was the same as the first year ... tied for 5th in Silver. Our finish this year is tied for 5th in Gold, meaning we finished ahead of eight teams (the Silver Division teams,) tied with three teams, and finished behind 4 teams. This, plus our 3-0 league record in JV competition are good signs of progress. Nice work ladies!

Apology On Wednesday, September 21st, remarks were made in the following article about ball handling calls in the first game of the Highline match. The WIAA prohibits any negative commentary or statements about officiating to the media or general public. I regret that the remarks were considered to be negative, and I have removed them. I apologize to the Officials and to our readership. The remarks were not intended to belittle either the contributions of our officials to our matches, or the quality of the competition that we enjoyed that night with the Highline Pirates. |
The Highline Pirates surged to an early lead with a one-sided win in game one, 25-4. But this adversity just spurred our Eagles, and over the course of the next half hour we got tougher and tougher. Highline won the second game, but not before Chelsea Mackner scored 4 straight aces in a comeback from down 15-21, and she seemed intent on going all the way to 25. But after a Highline timeout at 21-18, she made one and then missed one, to give the Pirates the serve. But although we got the serve back and scored again, that ended the rally, and Highline went on to win 25-20. The third game was a cliff hanger. Highline started the game with their second wave, but when the Eagles took the lead at 20-16, selected starters were inserted back into the lineup. But to no avail. Highline tied the game three times, but the Eagles won 27-25. The fourth game started well, but with the score 11-16, Highline ripped off four points and never looked back. Brian Shaefer, Eagle's manager and winter-time wrestler did the honors with the National Anthem, and Brian and buddy Terryll kept the fans amused with some cheer-leading antics including cart-wheels (scored at 2.0 on the gymnastic scale), one-armed pushups, and general craziness. Ariana Ransdell did her usual great job scorekeeping. The match finished at 8:58 pm. Prior to the Varsity match, the JV's pulled out another clutch victory defeating the Pirate JV's 25-16, 18-25, 18-16. The Varsity is now 1-2 in League play (1-3 overall) and the JV's are 3-0 in League play. Highline did not have a C team.
The Varsity lost a very close match with Evergreen Tuesday night. Both teams served very well, and the difference got down to a few plays late in the fourth game. The battle was long and hard, the four-game match finishing around 9:10 pm. The JV's played erratically, but when push came to shove they tied the third game at 14, and then worked steadily for the deuce win. The Varsity is now 1-1 in League play (1-2 overall) and the JV's are 2-0 in League play. Evergreen did not have a C team, but they will at our next match, which will be at home on October 7th.
13 September 2005: We learned by email this morning that Highline will not have a C team this year. The C schedule will be adjusted accordingly. Practice time for Thursday will be discussed at the Tuesday practice, 2:30 pm - 4 pm.
Maps to Mariner High School will be available at practice for parents who would like to attend (admission is charged.) We will LEAVE the parking lot at Lindbergh High School at 6:05 AM. JV's ... be there.
Please download the latest schedule from the links at the bottom of this page.

Our first week of competition was a roller-coaster for the Varsity; an eye-opener for the C's; and a challenge for the JV's who played the Jamboree with just six players. The "C" team started the week with a Labor Day evening practice from 6 to 8 pm. Tuesday was a half day of school for the Freshmen, and Wednesday was the first full day of school for all students. The Jamboree was on Wednesday at Lindbergh, and it included a Varsity and a JV Division. The "C" team helped setup the nets and provided score-keeping and lines-person assistance as needed, but there was no C division for them to play in.
The Jamboree proved to be a wake-up call for the Varsity who played well at times, but the overall effort was well short of the mark. Our Lady Eagles could not keep the pressure up against Kennedy, Hazen nor Evergreen. They saved the day when they rallied against Renton in a game that was decided by a controversial line call in the Eagle's favor at 26-24. But this was all preparation for the next day, our first league match against Hazen, and the Wednesday experience, as painful as it was, seemed to help. The Varsity played with much more focus, and managed to win its first League match in five, 21-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-25, 15-12. The highlight leaders for the Lady Eagles were Jennie Turner with 14 Assists and 2 Aces; Chelsea Mackner with 14 Kills, 5 Blocks, and 4 Aces; and Captains Marie Batschi with 6 Kills, 4-1/2 Blocks, 3 Aces, and Sammi Hernandez with 4 Kills, 4 Aces, and 1/2 Block.
The JV's had a great work-out at the Jamboree on Wednesday, with just six players. They battled but lost to Hazen, Renton and Kennedy, after starting the day with a split with West Seattle. On Thursday, with eight players, they reversed one of the Jamboree decisions, defeating Hazen in three, 22-25, 25-16, 15-6.
Almost the entire "C" team had their first refereed match against Hazen on Thursday. It was the usual "first-timer" experience. The front row players were waiting at the net for us to serve ... when the Hazen C's were the team with serve. The team was in free ball position ... when we were serving. The setter was focused on the opposing team ... while her team mates were trying to pass serve to her for a set. In the heat of battle, players forgot that you only have three contacts to get the ball back to your opponent ... or that you cannot contact the ball twice in a row. Players forgot where they were in the rotation order. There was mass confusion figuring out the difference between rotation position and home base. The pandemonium brought back ancient personal memories ... and some of more recent origin that were almost exactly one year old. But our players hung in there and steadily improved. The scores were 12-25, 5-25, and 10-15. The last game was quite competitive, and suggests that some of these problems may be behind us in our next match (at Renton on September 23rd.)
The Varsity tournament at Mariner High School got off to a bad start with two of the team's ten players over-sleeping Saturday morning. We managed to get to Mariner High School in time to fulfill our refereeing duties at 8 am, but this was a poor way to start the day. We went 0-6 in pool play against Inglemoor High School, Mt. Baker High School, and Olympic High School. But we got better as the day went on, and we were in a very tough pool (see below.) The day got a lot better when we nearly pulled an upset in the first round of the Silver Division playoffs against eventual Silver Division finalist Centralia. Trailing 4-16 in the first game, we regained our confidence and began blocking, spiking and serving tough, closing to 23 before falling 23-25. The second game was all ours, 25-14. In this game, we scored with 6 stuff blocks, we served for 4 aces, and we scored 4 hard kills. We started the third and deciding game with same momentum, scoring with a block and 3 aces. But after falling behind 2-6 Centralia rallied. We flopped around, and they finally won 15-11. There are just a ton of lessons to be learned from this tournament, and we were really fortunate to be able to play such good opponents. Monday's practice will be a big one. The final results for the Mariner Varsity Tournament:
| Gold Division | Silver Division |
| 1. Inglemoor 2. Shorecrest T3. C Kitsap T3. Mariner T5. Mt Baker T5 N Hale T5 Ft Vancouver |
1. Olympic 2. Centralia T3 Bellingham T3 Granite Falls T5 Lakewood T5 Lindbergh T5. Mt Tahoma T5 Roosevelt |

Sept. 10th, 2005 (match times revised): We have reached agreement with Renton, Kennedy and Evergreen, and have moved three mid-week matches to Friday. The first change is our match at Renton in two weeks which had been scheduled for Thursday, September 22nd. We learned on September 8th that the League match times must remain at the League designated times of 5:45 pm and 7 pm. With these revisions, we are now scheduled to play the Renton match on Friday, September 23rd, with the JV and C playing at 5:45 pm (start time,) and the Varsity at 7 pm. The bus will take the team to Renton with our departure from Lindbergh set for 4:40 pm.
The following week we will host Kennedy at home on Friday, September 30th. Again the JV and C matches will start at 5:45 pm, and the Varsity match at 7:00 pm. We have a match the following Monday with Hazen, and we have scheduled a morning practice on Saturday, October 1st, to help us prepare for the Hazen match. The time is presently set at 8 am to 10 am, but we will adjust this as needed to fit the players' schedules.
The Evergreen match that had been scheduled for Wednesday, October 5th, has been moved to Friday, October 7th. Again, we are hosting the match, and again the JV and (hopefully) C matches will start at 5:45 pm, and the Varsity match at 7 pm.
Our Senior night has been tentatively moved from Monday, October 17th, to Tuesday, October 18th. We will play Renton in that match. Renton needs to move a Wednesday match to Thursday to make this work. The big issue is the confirmation of referees for Renton's match with Kennedy on Thursday, Oct. 20th. We are also hoping that Mt. Rainier will move our match at Mt. Rainier from Wednesday to Thursday or Friday of that week.
Please download the latest schedule from the links at the bottom of this page.
Sept. 5th, 2005: The election of the Varsity Captains is now complete, and Sam Hernandez and Marie Batschi are our Captains for the 2005 fall season. It was clear from the voting that we had many qualified candidates, although that made the selection difficult. The good news is that we couldn't lose. With the choice of Sam and Marie, we are fortunate to have two very energetic and thoughtful leaders for the fall season. Congratulations Sam and Marie!
The Junior Varsity selected Katherine Sun and Gemma Rabang as their Captains for the 2005 Season. The C team selected Anne Gomez as their Captain, and the vote for Anne's Co-Captain will be held at practice on Wednesday. We have some super leaders for the C and JV teams. Congratulations ladies!

We did very well at the car wash, raising $463.45 which we will use for volleyballs for the coming season. Thanks to Dominos for letting us use their parking lot and water, and also for giving us the discount cards to give to our patrons. Good job to everyone who helped out, and a special thanks to all our great supporters who brought their cars down for us to wash.
